Sei'un AN Rōshi (Li-Yea Bretz)

Sei-’un Rōshi Li-Yea Bretz, was born in Taipei, Taiwan and lived in Malaya and Singapore for a number of years before immigrating to Brisbane, Australia in 1975.

In 1992, Li-Yea Bretz met Sei’un Rōshi in Brisbane and took up Zen practice with her in 1994. In the same year, Sei’un Rōshi confirmed her kenshō (‘awakening’).

In 2000, Sei’un Rōshi authorised Li-Yea to the role of assistant Zen teacher and in 2006, Sei’un Rōshi formally authorised her to teach, conferring the title as Zen Teacher within the Mountain Moon Zen Society. In 2001, she was granted the status of Assistant Teacher in the Sanbō-Zen Lineage. In 2007, Yamada Masamichi Roshi, the Abbott of San’un Zendō in Kamakura, formally conferred the teaching name Sei’un An (‘Clear Blue Sky’) giving her teacher status in the Sanbō-Zen Lineage.*

In 2015, the title of Rōshi (Zen master) was conferred upon her by Roselyn Stone. She is currently accepting students.

​Married with two children, Li-Yea Bretz also works as a Teacher in the areas of Information Processing Technology and Computing Skills in a Training And Further Education (TAFE) college. She is a trained high school teacher of Mathematics, Science and Information Processing Technology and has also worked as a Chemical Laboratory Scientist for a couple of years.

* While the teaching names of both Roselyn Stone and Li-yea Bretz are pronounced the same (Sei’un An), their Japanese characters and meanings differ.


Garry Cam

Garry Cam was appointed as a teacher by Sei’un Rōshi in 2006.

Garry commenced sitting with the group in 1993 and is available for dokusan or interview on Tuesday nights at the Brisbane zendō.

Jean Wilson

Jean Wilson was appointed as a teacher by Sei’un Rōshi in 2006.

Jean has been an active member of the group since 1993 and is available for dokusan or interview on Tuesday nights at the Brisbane zendō.

Matthew Love

He commenced Zen practice in 1993 and subsequently became a student of Sei Un An Roselyn Stone in 1994. Roselyn confirmed Matthew’s Kensho in July 1995. Matthew completed his examination in the room in November 2000 and became a Dharma successor to Roselyn in September 2006.

Matthew is currently taking students and is available at Mountain Moon Zen sittings.

Matthew is married and has with two beautiful children and a dog. He works as a family lawyer and mediator. He is also an enthusiastic amateur musician.
